Jobs hope as firm unveils proposals for training centre
Article featured in Express & Echo
A new centre for training in renewable technologies could be built under plans unveiled by an Exeter company.
PGL Training in Construction is seeking planning permission for a new
two-storey building on the Sowton Industrial Estate.
The proposed building, on a site currently used for storage adjoining
the premises removals firm Bishops Blatchpack in Kestrel Way, features
workshops and open-plan offices.
Six full-time jobs are expected to be created if the scheme gets the
go-ahead.
Explaining the company's plans, managing director Andy White said: "It's
with a view to extending the scope of training we offer into renewables,
including bespoke training courses for 'up-skilling' people in the
construction industry. Hopefully the planning application will be looked
upon favourably because it's going to bring extra jobs to the area and
create more opportunities for training and apprenticeships."
PGL currently employs 30 people and has been based at Clyst Works, Topsham since 2008. The company acquired the site in Sowton around12 months ago and the proposed facility would increase its training capacity by about 50 per cent.
If the plans are approved by Exeter City Council it is expected to be around six months before the new training centre is ready to open.
PGL was a partner in the Echo's successful 100 Places for 100 Futures campaign earlier this year, which resulted in 188 new apprenticeship places being created by employers in the Exeter area. The number of apprenticeships being trained by PGL on courses including plastering and carpentry, as well as plumbing and electrotechnical programmes, has grown in recent years to around 140 at any time.
It also offers NVQs in key construction disciplines for experienced workers and industry-specific short courses, including solar energy.
PGL's plans include seven car parking spaces. A design and access statement submitted on the company's behalf by agents Barrie Simons & Associates states: "The site in question gives the opportunity for a local entrepreneur to carry out an economically sized development to provide local employment in a sustainable area well served by the existing transport system."
